Birdwatchers can spot everything from bald eagles and roseate spoonbills to wood storks and red-cockaded woodpeckers. Covering over 70,000 acres, the refuge includes salt marshes, swamps, pine forests, freshwater pools, and tidal creeks. This diversity supports alligators, bobcats, otters, and countless other creatures. The St. Marks Lighthouse, built in 1831, is the second-oldest lighthouse in Florida and still stands within the refuge. It's a favorite spot for photographers and visitors. Archaeological sites within the refuge date back thousands of years. Native Americans, Spanish explorers, and early settlers all lived in or traveled through the area.
